NBA Rumors: Detroit Pistons Should Stop Wasting Their Time Chasing Tom Izzo

It seems like the NBA comes calling often for Tom Izzo of the Michigan State Spartans, and why wouldn’t it? As one of the best coaches in the college game today, Izzo has led a very talented Michigan State to six Final Fours in his 19 seasons with the school. Making it to the Final Four about once every three years, on average, has to be a serious selling point for NBA teams.

The Detroit Pistons are the latest team to be interested in the Michigan State coach and it makes complete and total sense. Tom Gores, the Pistons’ owner, has expressed that he is interested in reaching out to Izzo this coming summer regarding the team’s vacant head coaching position.

After firing Maurice Cheeks in the middle of a disappointing season, Gores, Joe Dumars and the rest of the Pistons’ front office have been compiling a list of names to replace the coach who they thought would turn things around in Detroit.

I mean, there was a time in which the Pistons were an Eastern Conference Finals teams on a regular basis, but those days are long gone.

Gores, a Michigan State alum, would love to add one of the best college basketball coaches out there to his staff — a man who players would likely connect with and, heck, probably even respect.

A coach who has a solid track record has been lacking in Detroit for quite some time — hence why the players never respect the coaches who are hired, resulting in losing seasons.

While Tom Izzo seems like a good fit, especially for the owner who graduated from Michigan State, he has said multiple times that he doesn’t want to fix something that isn’t broken and he’s happy right where he is. If he wouldn’t leave for the Cleveland Cavaliers job and a chance to coach LeBron James, he sure as heck isn’t leaving for this job.

Maybe next time, Detroit.
