The Dallas Mavericks are currently engaged in an absolute dogfight for the eight seed in the brutal Western Conference. Looking forward to the offseason, however, the Mavs will have some money to spend on a top-dollar free agent before they eventually extend star forward Dirk Nowitzki. Mark Cuban has deep pockets and a large checkbook, so here's a look at five players who he might break the bank for.

Stephenson is currently enjoying a breakout season for the Indiana Pacers. He is the Pacers' leading assist man, second leading scorer and he just happens to lead the NBA in triple-doubles. Stephenson could prove to be a very nice backcourt pairing with point guard Jose Calderon.

After this debacle of a season in Los Angeles this year, it would appear that the Lakers and Pau Gasol are heading towards a messy divorce. Gasol still has plenty left in the tank, and he would make a nice addition to a Dallas frontcourt that has some depth issues.

3. Luol Deng

Deng was jettisoned from Chicago to Cleveland in a midseason trade, and has not received much national attention since. Deng, however, is still a very solid player and would be a definite upgrade to Shawn Marion, who happens to be an unrestricted free agent in the offseason.

With all due respect to Jose Calderon, who has fit in quite well with Rick Carlisle's offense, he may not be the point guard of the future. Bledsoe has the potential to be that guy. He is a defensive stud who is not afraid to drive it to the basket on the offensive end. Imagining him alongside Dirk, and a rejuvenated Monta Ellis, should get a lot of Mavs fans excited for the future.

1. Carmelo Anthony

The Mavericks already have an efficient and entertaining offense, but adding Melo would improve it even further. Adding Anthony, while it may cause some holes in Dallas' defensive schemes, would cement the Mavs' status as a Western Conference contender.

Dirk Nails Game-Winner, Gets Love From Kobe

Kobe Bryant wasn't able to lace up for the Los Angeles Lakers against the Dallas Mavericks on Tuesday night, but he still managed to make the highlight reels on multiple occasions. After Dirk Nowitzki nailed what turned out to be the game-winning jumper, he stumbled backward into Bryant and received a pat of approval. This encounter is the definition of the saying 'game recognizes game' as the two players are both legends and future Hall of Famers.

Josh Smith Fakes Dirk Nowitzki Out of His Shoes

Josh Smith has returned to the Houston Rockets via trade, and he made the most of his first game back. He scored 16 points off the bench, including this drive on Dirk Nowitzki that made Smith look like Hakeem Olajuwon. Could Ty Lawson and Josh Smith be the spark duo off the bench that rejuvenates this Rockets team?

Watch Kings' Rondo Attempt To Trip Mavs' Williams

Last night's game between the Sacramento Kings and Dallas Mavericks was one of the most entertaining of the season. It was a back-and-forth contest that ended on a Deron Williams three-pointer as time expired in double-overtime. Unfortunately, Williams almost didn't get to take that shot as Rajon Rondo attempted to trip him from the bench earlier in the game which could have caused serious injury. Rondo should be suspended for his actions.
