It would have been perfectly understandable if Dallas Mavericks head coach Rick Carlisle had come into practice today mourning last night’s heartbreaking loss to the Los Angeles Clippers. After all, the acrid taste of that loss is most likely still in Carlisle’s mouth. However, he was surprisingly upbeat and even joked around with reporters.
“Hey, Jose!” yelled Carlisle. “Is your elbow okay?”
Carlisle yelled this question to starting point guard Jose Calderon after being asked if something was wrong with Calderon’s elbow. After receiving confirmation from Calderon that nothing was the matter, Carlisle said of Calderon, “He just likes to wear it,” referring to a sleeve on Calderon’s elbow.
That particular exchange drew hearty laughter from reporters. Carlisle, who not only shares a physical resemblance to legendary comedian and actor Jim Carrey, also happens to share a similar sense of humor. And why not? Laughter is pretty good medicine, especially when trying to get past the doldrums the Mavericks have suffered from of late.
Carlisle continued to get laughs out of reporters like a prime Carrey as he complimented one reporter’s hair and told the reporter he was going to introduce him to some hair product he could use later. The funniest moment, though, probably came when Carlisle told one reporter who used Dallas Cowboys owner Jerry Jones as an example in her question, “I don’t think it’s very nice to make fun of Jerry Jones, though.”
And maybe this is the sort of mindset Carlisle needs to transfer on to a basketball team that has gotten really tight at the end of close games. Maybe the Mavericks just need to relax and have fun out there. It is just a game after all.
