The Boston Celtics traded for Jerryd Bayless in order to save money. Bayless was in the last year of his deal and trading Courtney Lee would free up about $10 million in the next few years. Bayless was brought in to add depth to the point-guard position and to be a scoring spark off the bench. The 25-year-old has been quite impressive in his short time with the Celtics, and they should consider re-signing him this offseason.
Bayless done a nice job facilitating the offense at the one and has provided instant offense at shooting guard. He is averaging 9.7 points, 3.2 assists and shooting an efficient 37 percent from three-point land. The important thing is Bayless is shooting over 40 percent from the beyond the arc with Rajon Rondo on the floor. Rondo creates many scoring opportunities for Bayless, while Bayless certainly benefits from playing with a true play maker.
If Danny Ainge is able to construct a competitive team next season, then Bayless would make a valuable piece coming off the bench. Bayless can spread the floor and run the point. If Avery Bradley is re-signed then Bayless would make a terrific backup and make up for Bradley’s deficiencies. Nonetheless, it is always nice to have a sharp-shooter who can give the offense a spark off the bench.
Bayless seems to fit in well with the Celtics’ system and could be a key component to their next championship.
