The New York Knicks just fired Mike Woodson, thus leaving a vacancy at head coach. The Knicks have a win-now roster, even though Carmelo Anthony is an unrestricted free agent this summer. It will be a tough gig to be the head coach for one of the most scrutinized teams in the league, but the presence of Phil Jackson helps a ton. Here are five coaches who could take over as the Knicks' head coach before the start of the 2014-15 NBA season.
David Fizdale is one of the most notorious assistant coaches in the NBA. He has now won two rings, and he has been a great locker room presence for the Miami Heat. Fizdale is ready to take the next step at becoming a head coach. If the Knicks elect to go with someone new, Fizdale could very well be the option. Many people don't see Fizdale's influence on the Heat, but he is a smart mind who would bring a fresh mentality to this organization.
Brian Shaw finally got his chance to prove the world he's the real deal. Shaw was the understudy of Phil Jackson for the Los Angeles Lakers for years, and many believed Shaw was going to be the next big thing as a head coach. Although the Denver Nuggets were dysfunctional at times this past season, a lot of that had to with the injuries they had. With Jackson at helm, Shaw could very well be the Knicks' head coach next season.
It was weird to see George Karl getting fired by the Nuggets last year. After all, he led them to the No. 3 seed and he led them to their best franchise record. Karl was a great coach for Denver, and he has a notable track record. Karl and Jackson are friends from being in this league for awhile, and the combination of the two would be very intriguing.
Lionel Hollins is one of the best defensive minds in all of the NBA. During his tenure with the Memphis Grizzlies, Hollins made an impact on this squad. He turned them into a gritty squad that gives it their all on every defensive possession. The Knicks are annually at the bottom of the league in terms of points allowed. Having a defensive mind like Hollins will improve that statistic drastically.
Steve Kerr has been rumored to be the next head coach for the Knicks, and that is very believable. Kerr and Jackson are close from their days together in Chicago when the duo won five rings. Kerr is one of the smartest basketball minds out there, and he has seen every NBA team play in the past few years because he is a broadcast analyst for TNT. Although it would be his first head coaching job, Kerr has the mind to be an elite coach.
