The Minnesota Timberwolves had an inconsistent and disappointing 2013-14 season as they ended up with a 40-42 record in the Western Conference. Heading into the offseason, Minnesota has a large core of players intact, but a lot of questions. These are the five biggest questions that the Timberwolves must answer.
The Minnesota Timberwolves will likely have the 13th pick in the 2014 NBA Draft, and they also possess three picks in the second round. Minnesota is in dire need of help on the defensive end of the ball after ranking 26th in points per game against in 2013-14, and they could specifically use a small or power forward who possesses length. Having four picks will allow Minnesota to either trade up or out of the draft to address this need.
Ricky Rubio managed to stay on the court for all 82 games this year, but his averages of 9.5 points, 8.6 assists and 4.2 rebounds per game belie the fact that he wasn't all that impressive. Still, Rubio wants a deal north of the four-year, million that Steph Curry recently received, while Minnesota wants a smaller deal. It will be up to the Timberwolves to decide how badly they want Rubio, or if he is even the future at point guard.
Kevin Love is due to become a free agent during the summer of 2015, and time is running out for Minnesota to prove that he should stay in town. At 25 and coming off a season when he averaged 26.1 points, 12.5 rebounds and 4.4 assists per game, Love will certainly bring a lot back in a trade, and many teams have come calling already. Minnesota will have to decide if a huge haul is worth letting one of the best players in the NBA go.
Rick Adelman just announced that he is retiring, setting the stage for Minnesota to start searching for coaches. Amongst those who are on the Timberwolves' wishlist are Tom Izzo and George Karl, and the team will surely want to get things sorted out sooner rather than later. The next coach in Minnesota could decide the future of the franchise.
Minnesota have repeatedly underwhelmed in recent years, but they will be stuck with the same core group of players in 2014-15. When a new coach is secured, it will be up to the Timberwolves to decide if it is time to rebuild, tinker with things, or go all out to possibly get another star. The decision will impact the direction of the team for the next half decade.
