The Michigan State Spartans had one of their best seasons in the past few years and it looked like they had a chance to win a national title. However, getting bounced in the Elite Eight was considered a failure due to high expectations and Tom Izzo took the loss hard. Many have been speculating that he will leave Michigan State for the NBA, but those teams should quite wasting their time.
The Minnesota Timberwolves are one of those teams who have shown interest in the collegiate coach. Izzo is close friends with president of basketball operations, Flip Saunders, but the Minnesota Timberwolves are not what Izzo is looking for.
As a native of northern Michigan, Izzo had been rumored to be connected to the Detroit Pistons job — and that one would make much more since than the Timberwolves. Izzo quickly denied any interest that he was thought to have in his home-state Pistons and people moved on from that topic.
Now people are talking about him leaving for Minnesota because his good friend is the president of basketball operations there. Why is that so crazy?
If anyone thinks Izzo will leave the school he has been with for nearly 20 years because a friend wants him to coach a mediocre team, they are crazy. Tom Izzo is one of the most loyal coaches in college sports and money will not be a factor in his decision — if he has to make one.
Minnesota has two other college coaches, Fred Hoiberg and Billy Donovan, on its list and it looks like they are leaning toward adding a coach from that level.
However, Minnesota needs to stop wasting its time with Izzo. He’s not going anywhere.
