The Dallas Mavericks are three years removed from their first NBA championship in franchise history. And after the separation of that championship team, the Mavs find themselves searching for answers to what will lead back to the NBA finals. Here are five questions that must be answered before championship talk can even be considered.
Samuel Dalembert has a partially guaranteed contract that leaves an option open for next season. The Dallas Mavericks organization has expressed interest in keeping Dalembert on board, but they must decide if that is the best option during this offseason's free agency proceedings.
The Dallas Mavericks have gone after players such as Dwight Howard and Deron Williams during free agency in hopes of landing the heir to Dirk Nowitzki's throne. Carmelo Anthony must be the next target but his interest level in coming to town remains unknown.
The Vinsanity Highlight reel also known as Vince Carter has played out an extensive career. In his 16th season in the association, Carter has averaged 11.9 points and 3.5 rebounds. The Mavericks must decipher how much more the 37-year-old has to offer in the latter stages of his career.
As the Mavericks move into approach a new era in their organization, they must decide who they want to build their future around. This offseason will have a big part in that decision, especially if they are able to land a big-name free agent. Monta Ellis is a legitimate option to build around if this offseason is not kind to the Mavs.
Dirk Nowitzki is arguably rated in the top 10 greatest players of all time. The success he was able to accomplish with the Dallas Mavericks will not soon be forgotten, but it is not secret that he is nearing the end of his career. Nowitzki has expressed a desire to extend his contract a few more years for the Mavs, but nothing is for certain. Dallas will just have to wait what the playoffs and this offseason bring.
