Even during the NBA playoffs, the biggest story in the league is still the fact that Clippers owner Donald Sterling allegedly made some very hateful and racist comments regarding African-Americans. The fallout from the alleged event has already begun, but some formal action needs to be taken. Here are five ways the league could attempt to legally combat this despicable situation.

This would be punishing the team by making them have a worse product on the court. By having a worse product on the court, less fans are going to show up. With less fans comes less money. This move might be able to convince Sterling to sell the franchise before he's stuck in a profitless venture.

The league has already taken this action, so it only seems logical that this sanction could continue in the future. This wouldn't be a very harsh punishment, but it could be a first step in trying to oust Sterling as the owner eventually.

3. Allow Any and All Players/Coaches to Opt Out of Contracts

In any workplace situation, if some form of abuse takes place, sanctions occur in order to correct that for the individuals involved. Based on how uncomfortable these comments must make all players involved having to play and essentially earn a profit for the man who made these comments, anyone in the franchise should be allowed to leave after the season. Sterling would almost have to sell the franchise with the threat of this sanction.

2. Take Away Voting Rights on League Issues

It's clear based on his comments that Sterling has no right to be voting on league issues. It's bad enough that he's representing an NBA franchise, but for him to representing the league as a whole with a vote on league issues is an insult. By giving him no power in this regard, he may feel the need to sell the franchise. Any sanctions should be aimed at encouraging him to sell the team as the league can't legally force him to do so.

This sanction deals directly with the financials of the team so it may be tough to do, but it would send a strong message. It would provide the team with less money to sign players, which again would affect the product they put on the court. A worse product will make Sterling less money and force his hand into selling the franchise.
