The Los Angeles Lakers apparently want to make a ‘splash’ with their next head coach hire. Mike D’Antoni‘s resignation has opened the door for a new chapter to begin in L.A., so the team can ill afford to screw things up. Whoever they hire, it must be a home run. After all, we’re talking about arguably the most storied franchise in NBA history.
As for who’s on the Lakers short list, reports have emerged naming Kevin Ollie, John Calipari and Tom Thibodeau as possible candidates. Whether any of those guys will have interest in taking on the mess in L.A., is anyone’s guess.
Another name you’ll see across the internet is Jeff Van Gundy. The former Knicks and Rockets coach is apparently somebody who’s Kobe Bryant-worthy, which like it or not, has to be a part of the Lakers hiring process.
If Van Gundy isn’t in consideration, I’d have a hard time understanding why. He’s been in the announcers booth for a while now, but by choice. He could have come back to the sidelines several different times since 2007, but he seems to be waiting for the right opportunity to come along.
This Lakers situation definitely isn’t perfect, but it’s still one of the best coaching opportunities in sports.
Van Gundy has proven himself as a good NBA coach. In his 11 years on the sidelines he’s amassed a 430-318 record and made one Finals appearance. He’s also proven he can handle the big stage, with seven years of New York media dealings under his belt.
I’m not saying JVG is the guy for the Lakers job, but he better at least be on the team’s short list of candidates.
