Mike D’Antoni’s Resignation As Los Angeles Lakers Coach Was Inevitable
The much-maligned Mike D’Antoni resigned from his position as the Los Angeles Lakers‘ head coach on Wednesday. The organization had been hoping that the two parties could part ways in a peaceful manner. D’Antoni had one year left on his contract, but the Lakers did not want to keep him around. The coach was a horrendous 67-87 in his two seasons as the Lakers’ head man.
D’Antoni was given two options: resign or wait for the team to fire him. He made the right move by leaving on his own terms. The former Laker coach had an unfair advantage when it came to keeping his job. Some might think he deserved what he got, but this season was a tough one for the organization. With the injuries to Kobe Bryant and Steve Nash, D’Antoni didn’t have much to work with.
The Lakers shouldn’t have a problem finding a replacement because they are one of the most respected organizations in the NBA. GM Mitch Kupchak better make a good hire, or the Laker fans won’t be too happy. He already missed out on hiring former Lakers coach Phil Jackson. Kupchak needs to bring in a proven head coach and get the organization back on the right path.
Expect a hire to made soon, even though the Lakers are more focused on the NBA draft. Hopefully for D’Antoni, he will be given an opportunity with another organization.
