I suppose there were some optimistic people out there who thought Donald Sterling might actually apologize for his racist comments. Yeah, that’s not going to happen.
In his first comments since being banned from the NBA for life, Sterling fully backed up his scumbag reputation:
“I wish I had just paid her off.”
He’s of course speaking about his girlfriend who secretly recorded the conversations that will ultimately cause his exit from the NBA. Obviously, he just doesn’t care.
Sterling doesn’t care what anybody thinks. Not the general public, not the Los Angeles Clippers players, no one. He’s looking out for number one and he’s obviously of the mindset that money can buy anything.
In this case, money might have bought him more time as the Clippers owner, but that’s it. Eventually he would have outed himself as the racist that he is and this whole situation would have played out. It was really only a matter of time.
Some will argue that it couldn’t have come at a worse time for the Clippers franchise, while others will say it’s just the edge the team needs. At least in the immediate short-term following the release of the comments, it was a distraction.
We’ll find out on Saturday night just how distracted the Clippers truly are. If they lose, it will be hard to point the finger at anyone except Sterling. No group of players and coaches should have to deal with the circumstances the Clippers have over the past week.
