The general consensus is that it’s only a matter of time before Steve Kerr is officially announced as the next New York Knicks head coach. He’s acknowledged a visit to New York to meet with Phil Jackson and the writing has been on the wall for weeks now.

But who will Kerr’s assistants be?

It’s a question that was recently tackled by CineSport and Eddie Johnson, a Phoenix Suns TV Analyst. During the interview Johnson pointed to Scottie Pippen as a possible candidate to join Kerr on the New York sidelines. He cites Pippen’s knowledge of the triangle offense and his ability to lead as reasons why he’d be a good fit.

Johnson played with Pippen in Houston back in 1999 and is obviously familiar with Kerr from his time as Suns GM.

So, would Pippen be a good assistant with the Knicks?

Besides the fact that it would be weird to see the long-time Bull as a member of the Knicks, he’d probably make for a decent assistant coach. Given that the team is likely set to undergo a drastic offensive change with the switch to the triangle, why not bring in the hall-of-famer? It’s not like he has to be hands-on and fully accountable for what happens on the court. He can just be a valuable triangle offense consultant.

Even if Pippen isn’t brought in, you’d have to think Kerr will look to bring on another guy who’s played under Jackson. It only makes since for a first-time head coach who’s going to have to teach the lowly Knicks a new way of playing basketball.
