The Miami Heat have been waiting in the wings after they swept the Charlotte Bobcats in the first round of the 2014 NBA Playoffs. Meanwhile, the Brooklyn Nets needed a last-second block to win a game seven against the Toronto Raptors. Now the two teams will meet up in an Eastern Conference Semifinals matchup. What do the matchups look like in this series?

Based purely on reputation and skill, Deron Williams holds the clear advantage in this matchup. However, Williams still needs to show that he can step up for this Nets team when it matters the most. D-Will still gets the nod, but he has to step up to the levels that we all know he’s capable of.

SG Matchup: Dwyane Wade vs. Joe Johnson

This matchup could be the most intriguing of the series as it features probably the two most even talents. You’ll have to watch to see if Johnson can use his size and physicality to gain an advantage in this matchup. If he’s able to do so, he’ll be able to come out on top against Wade. I still think Wade will have a big impact, but I give Johnson the slight edge, especially after how he played against Toronto.

LeBron James is still LeBron James, right? I thought so. This isn’t even really a question then.

Paul Pierce is the de-facto power forward for the Nets, but I would be surprised to see him matched up with Haslem much. Even so, Pierce has the advantage in terms of impact between the two of them.

Kevin Garnett three years ago would have a distinct advantage against Bosh. However, Bosh may be the biggest factor in this series because of how good he can look against an older Garnett. The advantage here has to go to the Heat big man here.

The Nets came up big for them against the Raptors, but I’m not sure their inconsistency will serve them well in this series. Particularly against a Heat bench that has so many guys that can step up on any night in somewhat of a nightly trial basis, I think Miami’s bench will be of more assistance to a victory than Brooklyn’s.

While Jason Kidd has actually done an admirable job coaching this team, Spoelstra continues to be underrated as a head coach. Given that and the Heat head coach’s experience, I have to give the nod to the Heat when it comes to Xs and Os.

The Nets actually swept the season series with the Heat, but I’m not sure that wholly matters in this series. Miami was in cruise-control for much of this regular season and the Heat are also much better rested than the aging Nets having played only four games in the first round as opposed to seven.
