The 2014 NBA Playoffs are in full-swing after we witnessed arguably the greatest first round in postseason history and are possibly due for an equally entertaining second round. However, not every team is set to make noise this year. Some teams have their eyes on the future. Which 10 teams have to hit on their picks in the 2014 NBA Draft if they want to be in future playoff races?

The Memphis Grizzlies took the mighty Thunder to the brink in round one of the playoffs, but their future is much less certain. With the futures of guys like Zach Randolph and Marc Gasol still in question, the Grizzlies need to grab a prospect in the middle of the first round that can develop into an integral piece for them for years to come.

While the Chicago Bulls will be back and better with the return of a hopefully healthy Derrick Rose, they are still a team with their shortcomings. They have to grab a player in this draft that will help them spread the floor and become a more potent offensive team moving forward.

8. Phoenix Suns

To the surprise of almost everyone, the Suns almost made their way into the 2014 NBA Playoffs. With a young nucleus, there are only good things to come for this team. However, adding the right piece or pieces in this draft could put them over the edge and make them a threatening force in the West for the near future.

It’s likely that the Nuggets will be re-shaping their roster this offseason after missing out on the playoffs. What would really play in their favor, though, is to land a prospect in this draft that fits their new system and could develop into a star-like talent at the pro level.

6. Minnesota Timberwolves

It’s hard to imagine the Timberwolves doing much to their starting five this offseason unless they panic-trade Kevin Love. This team has a ton of young, promising talent already, but adding an above-average prospect to their bench could put them over the hump and into the postseason for the first time in a while.

Kyrie Irving is undoubtedly the cornerstone and the Cavs seem to be figuring out the right niche for guys like Dion Waiters. However, Cleveland would benefit a great deal from adding another top-notch prospect—a big man in particular—that could sure up their roster and make them a potent threat in the East.

With a new front office regime in place, the Kings seem to be moving forward and cleaning house. To build around DeMarcus Cousins, Sacramento has to hit on their lottery pick and find a guy that can handle the spotlight with their franchise big man.

The biggest thing the Lakers have to do this summer is use their cap-room in free agency wisely. With a high lottery pick, though, L.A. would benefit a great deal from adding a possibly game-changing prospect that won’t take up much cap-room and can help them potentially right a ship that was quite wrong this past year.

There are a bevy of talented young players in Orlando right now, but they’re still developing and still seem to be missing a few integral parts. Picking in the lottery again, the Magic have to find the next piece in the puzzle if they want to continue their reclamation project in the wake of Dwight Howard’s departure.

The Bucks could probably use about three or four lottery picks in this draft, but they only have one. With what is going to be one of the top picks, the Bucks have to start getting things on track by getting a guy who can possibly be a superstar in the future, but can also help them save face to some degree in the near future as well.
