Whether or not the New York Knicks are going after the former Golden State Warriors head coach should not even be in the discussion. The Knicks need to target Mark Jackson immediately after the Warriors stole away the Knicks’ prized target in Steve Kerr on Wednesday. Kerr was in line to become the next Knicks head coach ever since Phil Jackson was named president of the team prior to the end of the season.
The Knicks’ new president obviously did not have too much influence on his former player and probably does not have any influence over Jackson. When you take a look at Jackson, you have to look at what he did with the Warriors: He turned Golden State from a 23-win team in 2012 to a 51-win team in 2014. The Warriors had a short leash on Jackson, who could not make it out of the first round this year. Three seasons have made him into an ideal coaching candidate for any team.
When taking a look at the Knicks, though, it is unsure as to whether or not Carmelo Anthony will return to New York. With the absurd contracts and an aging squad, the Knicks are not the ideal place to go even though the organization would be happy to have someone like Jackson leading the team.
New York is targeting 2015 to sign big free agents when the huge lots of money are off the books. Will the team bring in a big-time head coach and star-studded talent? We will have to wait and see.
