Los Angeles Lakers Need to Stay Patient in 2014 NBA Offseason
The Los Angeles Lakers have a ton of cap space, vacant coaching position and lottery pick heading into the offseason. These resources bring optimism to an organization that seems to be headed in the wrong direction. There will be plenty of moves made, but the key is to stay patient with the decision-making.
The Lakers have done a good job of taking their time with the coaching change. Some teams have been quick to snatch up available coaches, but there are still plenty of quality prospects available, including some that have previously retired. Coaching in Los Angeles can be extremely difficult, and even good coaches will falter. The Lakers must look at all of their options to figure out which coach would be the best fit with them.
Once the Lakers find a coach, they can start to fill out their roster accordingly. It is very important that they find players who can fit in with the coach’s philosophy. This is an extremely deep free-agent class, especially if the majority of superstars choose to opt out of their contracts. The Lakers should be careful on overspending just to find another star, as there are plenty of options to choose from. They must find the right balance between putting a competitive team on the court for Kobe Bryant’s last two years, and remaining flexible for the future.
The lottery pick may be the Lakers most valuable asset this offseason. They have the potential to have a top pick in a very deep class, that has several future All-Stars. The Lakers can decide to keep the pick and groom their next superstar, or even trade it to acquire more talent in a win-now mindset. There will surely be suitors interested in that pick, giving the Lakers different plans to utilize.
After one of the worst seasons in Lakers history, there is hope that the organization can change things for the better this summer. A new coach, new roster and possible young star leads to reasons to be optimistic for the future. If the Lakers can remain patient in their decision-making process, then good things are surely to come.
