The Donald Sterling saga has reached an all time low, but it might sink lower as the summer progresses. I hope it goes away just as much as most, but that still does not mean that is what is going to happen. Here are five possible outcomes for Sterling's fate as it concerns the Los Angeles Clippers.
This will not happen. Enough said.
This could happen, and unfortunately it probably will. The most interesting thing to keep an eye on is if the Clipper players decide to stick with the franchise if the news about this starts to get dicier.
It is complicated when you bring private conversations in to the courtroom, and it will be crucial for the league to validate the recording in court. Without it, the league would be resting mainly on speculation for evidence.
It is still unclear whether the leaked cancer story was just to create sympathy a la Royal Tenenbaum in "The Royal Tenenbaums", but I guess we have to believe it until someone has disproved it. If true, it creates the possibility that Donald could pass away before any of this has to be dealt with. Still does not seem likely.
The NBA is probably close to a multi-trillion dollar business at this point, and they will not let a litigious and racist owner upend all of the money to be made in the next decade. The Sterlings, divorced or not, will more than make up all of the money they have ever poured into the Clippers. Hopefully that will be enough for them to walk away from this before causing any additional pain.
