Boston Celtics Pursuing Kevin Love is a No-Brainer
After a horrid season, the Boston Celtics are ready to gather their chips and ship them out for a premier player. Recent reports indicate that the Celtics plan to make an offer for Minnesota Timberwolves power forward Kevin Love. Boston will allegedly include a lottery pick in a package deal for Love’s services. This would be a terrific move for the Celtics.
Love reportedly plans to become an unrestricted free agent after next summer unless Minnesota can deal him to a contender. Many other teams, including the Golden State Warriors, Chicago Bulls, Houston Rockets and Los Angeles Lakers, are interested in acquiring the All-Star power forward. However, do any of these teams have more to offer to entice the Minnesota than the Celtics?
The Celtics have a possible top-5 pick and an additional top-20 pick in the high-anticipated 2014 NBA Draft with three future unprotected draft picks in 2016, 2017 and 2018 courtesy of the Brooklyn Nets. Boston also has financial flexibility and young players like Jared Sullinger and Kelly Olynyk to throw into a deal.
Boston may not be on the top of Love’s list, but he does not have a no-trade clause and has no say in a trade. If Boston gives Minnesota an offer they can’t refuse, Love is not even a factor in the decision. Some may be worried that Love wouldn’t sign an extension. However, pairing Love with Rajon Rondo would instantly make the Celtics a top-four team in the Eastern Conference. No player in Celtics’ history has ever not liked being in Boston when they are a winning team.
Instead of waiting for a draft pick to bloom in three to five years, the Celtics need to role the dice on Kevin Love and bring him to Boston. It is the first step toward the Celtics’ next championship.
