Several teams around the NBA are putting together packages to trade for All-NBA player Kevin Love. The Minnesota Timberwolves will likely lose Love via free agency at the end of the 2014-15 season as he has stated that he wants to test the free agent market. The Timberwolves know that they will lose Love, and they don’t want to lose him and gain nothing in return.
Love has pretty much made it clear the places he would like to play, so if I am a team that is not on his preferred list, it would be wise to stay away from him.
Love will garner a lot of attention on the trade market due to his value, but teams should be cautious. The Los Angeles Lakers were bamboozled in a similar situation with Dwight Howard that actually set the franchise back. It may seem like the ideal move to trade for the perennial All-Star, but there should a concern. Renting Love for one season could be detrimental, and it is not worth it if he still bolts via free agency.
Saying “I do” to Love seems like the right thing to do, but it would not be wise to fall in Love in this case. He is an awesome player who could propel a franchise to the next level, but if he doesn’t decide to stay with the team, the franchise will be stuck with divorce papers faster than Kris Humphries.
