2014 NBA Draft: If Marcus Smart is Available, Los Angeles Lakers Have to Take Him

Marcus Smart

The Los Angeles Lakers had a nightmare of a season, but that nightmare of a season earned them the No. 7 pick in the 2014 NBA Draft. Considering that this is being deemed one of the best draft classes in quite some time, picking at No. 7 is not a bad thing. Although there are going to be many players to choose from, if Marcus Smart is available, the Lakers have to take him.

Smart basically did it all at the college level for the Oklahoma State Cowboys. Heck, he even pushed a fan. That aside, he managed to put up 18 points per game, 5.9 rebounds per game, 4.8 assists per game and 2.9 steals per game. That is one heck of a stat line and Smart managed to do that in arguably the most competitive conference in college hoops (Big 12).

The Lakers desperately need a good point guard, Steve Nash didn’t quite get it done this year, and Smart would be the perfect guy.

He is one of the most talented players in the draft and his potential is very high. I am sure L.A. would like to have Andrew Wiggins or Jabari Parker, but Smart is not a bad option. In fact, he would have likely gone in the top five of last summer’s draft.

Smart is a very competitive player, he is super talented and he is only going to get better. After finishing the season off at 27-55, the Lakers could definitely use a guy like Smart running the point. I am sure their eyes will be on other players as well, but they have to draft Mr. Smart if he is available at pick No. 7.
