If there is any team in the NBA that needs immediate fixing, it’s the Milwaukee Bucks. Their league-worst 15-67 record signifies they need all the help they can get. Unfortunately, it’s not just one or two things that need overhauling. The good news is that the new team owners are determined to right the wrongs and produce a confident team in 2014-15. Here’s a look at five things that must happen in order for the Bucks to improve.
O.J. Mayo was signed last year to help lead Milwaukee to the playoffs. Instead, the team turned into a dire situation, which meant coach Larry Drew went with younger players instead of proven veterans. The move made sense because the season was lost from the get-go. However, Mayo’s confidence disappeared. One thing that must be fixed is giving the guard a reason to be confident again so that he can dominate day in and day out.
Larry Sanders is a classic example of a player who has a good year, gets a huge payday, and then doesn’t meet expectations. Fans in Milwaukee have seen this too many times before, which is why the organization can’t tolerate it. I want to believe Sanders can return to his 2012-13 form, but the reality is the Bucks need to find a proper suitor and trade him. That way they can draft Joel Embiid and have a legitimate center for years to come.
Brandon Knight had a terrific season as he led the team in points and assists per game. However, does that mean he’s good enough to be the starting point guard next season? That’s what Milwaukee must figure out. The point guard is the most important position on the court. If the Bucks want to rebound from their dismal record, they better be sure they have someone at the point who can inspire the team.
Giannis Antetokounmpo is the possible superstar Milwaukee needs if they ever want to reach the NBA Finals. He’s youthful, talented, and loaded with potential. At this point, the organization must recognize it and build him up. Not only do the Bucks have to continue his progression in a positive way, but they must also surround him with quality talent so that his skills don’t go to waste. This is a fix that must happen in order to ensure success.
Milwaukee has the No. 2 overall draft pick. Whatever they do, they can’t squander it. There are so many quality players available that the Bucks must make sure they pick the right one. Choosing a Greg Oden instead of a Kevin Durant could be the final straw in a franchise that hasn’t seen the light of day in 14 years. Whether it’s Wiggins, Parker, or Embiid, Milwaukee better be sure they turn him into the superstar that he’s supposed to be.
