After a storied career with the Dallas Mavericks, Dirk Nowitzki is once again a free agent. While all signs point to a return to Dallas, here are five potential landing spots for one of the greatest scorers in NBA history.

The Wizards may not seem like a possible destination at first thought, but with Trevor Ariza and Marcin Gortat both headed for free agency, they should have enough cap space to go after Nowitzki if they so choose. Washington is an ascending team with John Wall, Bradley Beal and Nene. Adding Nowitzki to that core would instantly make this squad a contender in the Eastern Conference.

4. San Antonio Spurs

This scenario may seem far-fetched, but if the Spurs win the 2014 Finals and Tim Duncan decides to ride off into the sunset, San Antonio will have a big hole to fill at the power forward position. Nowitzki will only leave Dallas for a contender. If he were replacing a retired Duncan, the Spurs would still be strong enough to contend for a championship. Nowitzki may not want to play for a rival but if they called, he would have to listen.

3. Houston Rockets

The Rockets are another rival team that should look into pursuing Nowitzki. Sure, the team already has Chandler Parsons, but he is going to be a restricted free agent and the Rockets are reportedly trying to clear space to add another max player to go with Dwight Howard and James Harden. Nowitzki could be had for less than the maximum and if he were to team with Howard and Harden, the Rockets would be an instant title contender.

2. Chicago Bulls

It's no secret that the Bulls are looking to add a superstar this summer, having expressed interest in Carmelo Anthony and Kevin Love. Yet, both of those players will require max contracts and valuable trade assets. Nowitzki could be had for cheaper and with the return of Derrick Rose, adding Nowitzki to a core that also includes Joakim Noah, Taj Gibson and Jimmy Butler would make the Bulls a true title contender.

At the end of the day, the best place for Nowitzki is Dallas. He has said he wants to remain a Maverick and considering his close relationship with owner Mark Cuban, it's hard to see him leaving. Furthermore, if he takes a hometown discount, the Mavs could pursue a max contract player to team with Nowitzki, Monta Ellis and Jose Calderon, giving the greatest player in Mavericks history one more shot at a title run.
