NBA Free Agency: 5 Potential Landing Spots For Marcin Gortat

Marcin Gortat will be one of the most highly coveted players in free agency when it begins in July, and he'll likely have no shortage of suitors. In a league where true centers are growing increasingly obsolete, Gortat is one of the few seven-footers left who can affect the game on both sides of the ball. While Gortat can get the most money and years from the Wizards, he will certainly have his options of where to ply his trade.

Of course, the most obvious possibility is that Gortat takes the years and money, as most do, and chooses to stay in Washington where the Wizards have a good young squad that made it to the second round of the playoffs. As they own Gortat's Bird Rights, Washington can offer him one more year at his yearly salary than any other team, which could put them in the driver's seat.

Before you laugh, think of this possibility: if each of Miami's "Big Three" opt out of their contracts this offseason, but Miami only opts to re-sign LeBron James and Dwyane Wade, they could have some extra money to throw at another big man. While there's no telling whether or not Miami would let Bosh go, Gortat would be the true center Miami has lacked and would make them even more versatile and dangerous.

The Los Angeles Lakers will have a lot of cap space this offseason and a big need for a man in the middle. With Pau Gasol and Chris Kaman also free agents, the Lakers will likely be looking to restock their team for another final run with Kobe Bryant. Gortat would be a nice fit in L.A. and, playing with Kobe and the No. 7 pick in the draft, L.A. could be poised to rebound much quicker than people expected.

Could Gortat really end up back with the team that traded him this past year? Sure, why not? Phoenix has tons of cap space and their current situation is night and day from where they were when they made the decision to deal Gortat to Washington back in October. While the Suns have a host of young big men on their roster, none has the skill of Gortat, at least not yet, and Phoenix would get a huge boost bringing back the big center.

The Dallas Mavericks could be the biggest suitor for Gortat this offseason, even with Samuel Dalembert on the roster. Dalembert won't prevent the Mavs from offering some of their cap space to Gortat in an attempt to make one more run behind Dirk Nowitzki. Dallas was surprisingly good this season under Rick Carlisle, and the addition of a true difference-making center like Gortat could give them a shot to compete with the elite.
