You got the feeling that the Cavaliers of 2013-14 was a mash of talent that never really fitted together to make a cohesive group. That lack of continuity cost the Cavs a playoff spot in a really weak Eastern Conference. With Cleveland now going back to the drawing board, let's look at five ways the Cavs can improve their team this offseason.
The Cavs assumed that Jack would bring his same explosive scoring veneer that he displayed with the Golden State Warriors. It did not pan out that way, in large part due to former coach Mike Brown not defining Jack's role with the team. One of the priorities for the new Cavs coach will be to define what Jack's role will be with the team.
Gee has the talent to be a special player for Cleveland, but he has been hamstrung by coaches who would rather keep his talent on a leash. Gee's talent needs to be unshackled in order for the Cavs to have a chance at the postseason next year.
Waiters is a talent, that's for sure. But it is also a known fact that he and Kyrie Irving do not get along, and at some point this offseason, the Cavs are going to have to find a way to ship Waiters out of town. It would be the best for both Waiters and Cleveland.
Not even a mid-season trade for the former Bulls star could lift the flagging hopes of the Cavs. Now with Deng an unrestricted free agent, the Cavs will have to figure out if Deng is worth re-signing or whether it would be better to let him walk.
Irving is saying all of the right things as he enters his final year of his contract. He told the local Cleveland newspaper that he would be "excited" if the Cavs offered him a long-term extension, and the Cavs would be wise to keep him in Northeast Ohio for as long as they can.
