After a long and miserable season, the Philadelphia 76ers can finally see the light at the end of the tunnel. But there isn't a straight path to the light. Sam Hinkie and the Sixers must make the right moves this offseason if they want the franchise to continue heading in the right direction, and there are five things the Sixers need to keep atop their priority list.
With the third pick in this month’s NBA Draft, the Sixers will be left with whichever of the big three college stars are still available. If it turns out Cleveland and Milwaukee are shying away from Joel Embiid, the Sixers need to find a way to trade up for Jabari Parker or Andrew Wiggins. With the glaring hole at small forward for the Sixers, passing up on the hottest wing prospects since LeBron James would be a huge mistake.
Rumors have recently been swirling around the Sixers' point guard and reigning Rookie of the Year Michael Carter-Williams and possibly being traded in order to take Dante Exum in the draft. For the Sixers to trade a key piece on their roster who has proven his place in the league for a point guard no one really knows much about would set the rebuilding process back even further.
Thaddeus Young’s name has been mentioned in nearly every possible trade scenario since the tanking process began. With the NBA Draft only weeks away, the Sixers need to make up their mind whether they want him to be a part of the team’s future or ship him out for the best possible asset they can snag, whether it be a draft pick or another solid piece added to the roster.
Reports surfaced throughout the year about the progress of Nerlens Noel during his recovery. Some of his strides were a heightened vertical, a revamped shooting form and gaining an understanding of the game. And of course for MCW, we got to witness his development. As the Sixers' two most valuable assets, their continued development during the offseason is crucial.
There’s absolutely no certainty surrounding the 76ers' roster next season, outside of the fact it will surely be one of the youngest in the NBA. That said, the Sixers need to target some veteran free agents this summer just for the leadership and experience they can bring to guide the younger centerpieces of the franchise.
