5 Ways to Fix the Washington Wizards This Offseason

The Washington Wizards enjoyed surprising playoff success this past season, and it will unfortunately lead to raised expectations in the year to come. I hope that they can keep it rolling, but they will need to address a lot of issues in the offseason. Obviously, most of their roster and coaching staff are locked in at this point, and so some of the items on this list are just minor adjustments. Free agency will be mentioned as well. Enjoy.

It is far too late for that, which likely means the Wizards will not be winning a title in the next three to four years. Randy Wittman will keep D.C.'s favorite basketball team in the playoff hunt at the very least. I know this is probably a pessimistic way to look at things, but that is what happens when you are raised in the DMV.

Trevor Ariza was clearly not only a floor spacer for the Wiz last season, but also a veteran championship presence. However, that only goes so far, and ultimately you need to have young talent to win a title. I do not know how many years Ariza has left in the tank, and so it makes me wonder whether the Wizards would be wise to keep him in the coming years.

3. Make the Most of Marcin Gortat

Marcin Gortat was a game changer for the Wizards last season, and they would not have made the playoffs without him. However, the point has to be made that the Wizards traded their first round pick for him in a loaded draft this summer, which is very short term thinking. You do not want short term thinking from the folks in your organization who should be thinking about the future.

2. Keep Sam Cassell Around

My caveat with Wittman's extension is that we need to keep Sam Cassell on the bench as well. I see some of the Wizards' guards tuning out their head coach at times, and I will admit that Cassell looks like ET. However, he is a highly intelligent basketball mind, and I can see the effect that he has had over John Wall the last couple seasons.

1. Revamp the Offense

If Wittman is going to be the coach for the foreseeable future, then I am going to need to see some improvement from him. I feel the pain of Oklahoma City Thunder fans, because Scotty Brooks is in the same boat as the Wiz's head coach. There need to be changes within the offense, and especially if the Wizards want to win the East one day.
