As if the Miami Heat don’t already have enough ego on their roster, Carmelo Anthony appears to have worked his way onto their free agency radar. While it would seem that their interest in the New York Knicks’ selfish scorer is illogical, there could be an underlying cause.
The Heat could be preparing to make a run at Anthony because they’re under the impression that LeBron James will be opting out and testing the open market this offseason.
Put simply, adding Anthony to the Heat’s current Big Three makes no sense. Not only do they already have enough ego to fill three NBA teams, but they can’t handle four max contracts and don’t have the floor minutes to accommodate that much star power. Anthony wouldn’t fit on the roster, no matter how you prefer to spin it.
That leads to the only logical conclusion: he’s their top option to replace James in the lineup.
Both players technically play small forward, so Anthony would easily be able to fill the void in the Heat roster if James bailed on South Beach. While the former Knick certainly isn’t as well-rounded or team-oriented as James, he would easily be the best option available if the King opted out.
There are plenty of angles to take on this recent story regarding Miami’s interest in Anthony, but this one appears to make the most sense. The Heat aren’t fitting all four of those big heads on one roster, which has to signal an impending departure from at least one of them. Considering James’ history and rumors that he would want out if Miami falls short in the NBA Finals, he seems like the most likely candidate to throw in the towel on the Heat.
We’ll see how it all plays out in the coming months.
