After weeks and weeks of speculation, Derek Fisher has been announced as the new head coach of the New York Knicks. He's definitely a 'Phil Jackson guy', which is probably a good thing. But the job Fisher is taking on, is no doubt one of the toughest in all the NBA.
Here are the top 5 issues in the way of the rookie head coach being successful:
Word on the internet was that Marv Albert scared Steve Kerr away from taking the Knicks job by telling him about how horrible morale is within the organization. Many point to James Dolan as the reason why the Knicks have been bad for so long. Luckily for Fisher, he's got Phil Jackson as his middle man. If Phil truly gets the power he should, Fisher's life will be filled with a lot less front office-related stress.
The Knicks are about to start running the Triangle Offense. That means everybody has to be on the same page, and that there's no room for selfish behavior on the court. Can Fisher get players like JR Smith to buy into the team concept?
The Knicks were once a proud, winning franchise that attracted high-profile free agents. Times have changed. Over the past decade or so, the Knicks have become one of the NBA's biggest jokes. Fisher and Jackson must reestablish a positive culture and once again make New York into a top destination for big name free agents. The way to do that? Winning games on a regular basis.
Stoudemire has a player option for 23 million this season. Of course, there's no chance of him declining it. Can Fisher get anything out of the washed up star in his last season in New York? If he can actually stay healthy, there's a chance. If Stoudemire wants to resurrect his career, he'll listen to every bit of advice he gets from Jackson and Fisher.
Carmelo -- you in or out? Some question like that will be posed to him in the upcoming weeks. It's actually a tough call on whether or not he can help the team moving forward, given the large amount of money he commands. Some people believe the Knicks would be better off without him. Some think they need him. Either way, Fisher needs a firm commitment. Whether it's all in or all out, the Knicks can at least move ahead.
