Dallas Mavericks star Dirk Nowitzki was a recent guest on KRLD-FM 105.3, touching on many subjects, including current New York Knicks forward and potential free agent Carmelo Anthony. “If Carmelo would really love to come here, we’d love to have him, and if not, then we’re looking at some other options to make this franchise better and be a winner . . . again,” Nowitzki said.
Now that doesn’t sound like a guy who is fairly confident Anthony is, much less wants, to come to Dallas. Of course, Anthony and Nowitzki aren’t exactly hitting the club together during the offseason, so it makes sense Nowitzki is clueless about what Anthony wants. Nevertheless, Nowitzki does not seem to be overly thrilled with the idea of Anthony hogging up the limelight in Dallas.
What could the reason possibly be? Anthony is good friends with Miami Heat star LeBron James, who is good friends with James’ teammate Dwyane Wade, so it’s possible Anthony is simply guilty by association, so to speak. Nowitzki, of course, makes no secret about his utter hatred for the Heat, which dates back to ridiculous comments from Wade in 2006, questioning Nowitzki’s ability to lead the Mavericks.
But on a personal level, nothing too serious has ever really happened between Nowitzki and Anthony. So Nowitzki is basically saying that he wouldn’t mind having the firepower of Anthony on his roster, but he’s just not going to get on his hands and knees and beg Anthony to bring his talents to the city of Dallas.
