Shawn Marion will be 36 years old by the time the next season starts. He has lost the elite athleticism that made him such an entertaining player to watch, but he has been able to adapt his game and is still an effective player, especially on the defensive end. His ability to produce on a daily basis would give the Los Angeles Lakers a reliable wing player next season. Even with his age, he would be a quality signing for the team during the offseason.
Marion’s best contribution to the Lakers would be his defensive ability. He is not as quick as he once was, but has become more intelligent on that end of the court and understands how to guard the better scorers in the league. He is versatile enough to cover multiple positions, and is very good at reading the game. He is still a very good rebounder and averages over a steal per game.
Offensively, Marion is still an efficient finisher and knows where to be on the court. He may find a more suitable role coming off the bench at this point in his career, where he won’t have to match up against the best players every night. He shoots a high percentage from the field and is a reliable free throw shooter, allowing him to still contribute.
Even though the Lakers need to get younger and quicker, Marion might be one of the few veterans who would be able to help them next year. His defensive skills would be an upgrade on the roster, as would his versatility. He has experience playing with Steve Nash, and will likely not be looking for a large contract. The Lakers would be wise to give Marion a look this offseason.
