2014 NBA Draft: Joel Embiid’s Injury Could Be Detrimental to the Philadelphia 76ers
Almost every analyst who covers the NBA has Joel Embiid, Jabari Parker and Andrew Wiggins going 1-3 in next Thursday’s NBA Draft. However, news broke earlier today that Embiid suffered a foot injury within the past few days, and there is a chance it could be broken. With the Philadelphia 76ers holding the third overall pick, they are the team that could be affected the most by this injury.
Rumors have circulated that the 76ers covet Wiggins over the other two top prospects and could be interested in trading up for the first overall pick to select him. Now, with the current injury to Embiid combined with his previous back problems, there is a legitimate chance that both the Cleveland Cavaliers and Milwaukee Bucks will want to stay away from him.
With none of the top three prospects gaining heavy momentum to become the first overall pick, it only makes sense that Cleveland and Milwaukee will take players without an injury history. Both Parker and Wiggins are potentially franchise-changing talents.
This leaves Philadelphia. While things could be much worse, all indications are that Embiid is not the player they want. Embiid’s foot will heal, and he will most likely be fine for the start of the regular season. However, another injury before his career gets underway is extremely alarming. For the 76ers to get the guy they want the most, Sam Hinkie may have to work some more of his magic.
