With the 2014 NBA Draft less than a week away, all signs previously pointed to the Cleveland Cavaliers taking former Kansas star Joel Embiid with the No. 1 overall pick–that is until the devastating news that the center would need surgery to repair a fractured foot.
Obviously, this is the last thing Embiid or any of the teams with a top-five pick want to hear before next Thursday considering how much this injury will impact his draft stock, but at least Embiid seems to be in good spirits about the injury.
In fact, Embiid seems to be trying to stay positive enough where he was willing to take a hilarious selfie of himself right before undergoing surgery on Friday morning. In case you’ve been living under a rock for the last year or so, “selfies” have become a popular way of life and it’s safe to say this photo was the last thing any of us would have expected from Embiid before surgery.
Unfortunately, this latest news on Embiid will certainly make things interesting next Thursday as nobody knows what to expect in the NBA Draft. Embiid to the Cavaliers seemed to be a lock considering the amount of potential surrounding the center, but now it wouldn’t be a surprise to see Cleveland take a safer pick like Jabari Parker or Andrew Wiggins.
Only time will tell when it comes to which team will take a chance on Embiid, but for now–all we can do is enjoy this selfie for the next couple of days.
