Reports indicate that Carmelo Anthony has elected to do what he said he would all along and will opt out from his contract with the New York Knicks. Suitors for Anthony in free agency will include the Knicks, Chicago Bulls, Houston Rockets, Dallas Mavericks and Miami Heat. Here are five reasons why Anthony has chosen to opt out and test free agency.

With a new coach in Derek Fisher and new president of the organization in Phil Jackson, Anthony had to be feeling pretty uncertain when it comes to the Knicks' future. Fisher is completely unproven as a coach, and the same goes for Jackson as a front office executive. Rather than having a new coach and system essentially chosen for him, it's reasonable to suspect that Anthony wanted to make the choice himself via free agency.

Terrible contracts to Amar'e Stoudemire and Andrea Bargnani (among others) will make it very difficult for Jackson to put the Knicks in a position to contend anytime soon, even if he does prove to be adept in the front office. Anthony isn't getting any younger and presumably wasn't too happy with the prospect of waiting through a rebuild.

On many nights last season, Anthony looked like the only capable player on the floor for New York. Opting out gives him a chance to find a new team and play with talented players just as he is. Any one of Dirk Nowitzki, James Harden or Derrick Rose would probably be quite a bit more fun to play with than Raymond Felton and J.R. Smith.

2. Financial Security

Something that has been largely ignored in the lengthy Carmelo Anthony saga has been the financial security that opting out will allow him. If he opted in with New York and suffered some kind of career-threatening injury, he could have ultimately cost himself tens of millions. Signing outside of New York will likely require Anthony to take a discount, but the security a long-term deal offers (regardless of who gives it to him) cannot be ignored.

The biggest reason for Anthony opting out and testing free agency is that he wants to win. With plenty of terrible contracts and an utter dearth of roster talent, that wouldn't have been possible in New York for a number of years. Joining the Bulls, Heat, Rockets or Mavericks offer Anthony a far better chance to win the elusive championship ring he hasn't yet come close to.
