As we move closer to the beginning of NBA free agency, more and more rumors are connecting Carmelo Anthony to the Chicago Bulls. The whispers have increased in volume to such a degree as to make the marriage between Chicago and Anthony appear to be a foregone conclusion. Nevertheless, there are plenty of plausible reasons that the rumors will turn out to be nothing but smoke. Here are 5 reasons why Anthony won't sign with Chicago this summer.

With LeBron James choosing to opt out of his contract with the Miami Heat, both him and Anthony will be free agents at the time same. The two are good friends and have indicated a desire to play on the same team, and that's extremely unlikely to happen in Chicago due to salary cap constraints. James opting out adds another barrier to the Bulls signing Anthony.

Rumors have sprouted up that suggest Derrick Rose would prefer Kevin Love on the Bulls over Anthony. The truthfulness of these rumors is certainly questionable in light of the fact that they came out of a New York media outlet. Still, this kind of speculation has to put some doubt in Anthony's mind regarding how good of a fit Chicago really is for him.

Anthony has gone on record recently stating that family is one of the chief factors he will keep in mind when making his decision. Carmelo has a seven-year-old son who understandably would be in a pretty tough position if forced to suddenly switch schools and states. In this sense, remaining with the New York Knicks and avoiding the pay cut and family upheaval that signing in Chicago would entail has to seem very enticing to Anthony.

Tom Thibodeau's emphasis on defensive excellence is his defining trait as a coach, which can't be all that attractive a reality to the somewhat defensively-challenged Anthony.

Despite the big market status, Chicago never seems to end up nabbing the premier names in free agency. In 2000, the organization failed in its pursuit of Tracy McGrady and Grant Hill, so the Bulls were left with the enormously disappointing Ron Mercer. In 2010, Chicago missed on James, Dwyane Wade and Chris Bosh, so it had to settle instead for the letdown that Carlos Boozer ultimately ended up being. Free agency has not been kind to the Bulls.
