After losing the NBA Finals in five games to the San Antonio Spurs, Miami Heat forward LeBron James decided to opt out of his contract with the Heat on Tuesday. James will join Carmelo Anthony on the free-agent market this offseason in what is already shaping up to be an even hotter summer.
The speculation has been James going to the Los Angeles Lakers, Cleveland Cavaliers and even taking less money and courting Anthony to the Heat. However, one team you cannot count out is the Brooklyn Nets. The franchise is paying more than $102 million in salaries to its players, and the Nets are paying the highest in luxury tax. Those things you would think would deter the Nets in the market. You would think that because it would deter any other team, but no one else has a billionaire owner.
Mikhail Prokorhov does not seem to care about how much luxury tax he has to pay. It makes sense for Prokorhov to go after the hottest free agent this summer in James. Brooklyn needs an added piece to get to the next level. With Deron Williams, Joe Johnson and Brook Lopez already, James would give the team the added boost it needs to get to the next level while he would stay in the Eastern Conference where the competition is a bit easier.
Who really knows what James actually wants in a team? With his kids in school in Miami, it does not make sense for James to leave the Heat in pursuit of anywhere else. With that said, Brooklyn should try its hardest to court the King.
