If the Boston Celtics fail to land a premier player like Kevin Love, then trading Rajon Rondo for multiple future pieces should be a priority this offseason. The Celtics need to trade at some point to avoid losing him in free agency and getting nothing in return. Here are six scenarios involving Rondo that make sense for both sides.

The Charlotte Hornets need a popular face of their new logo. Rondo would be a perfect candidate to put fans in the seat. The Hornets could trade Michael Kidd-Gilchrist, Cody Zeller, Gerald Henderson and the No. 9 pick for Rondo and Jeff Green. Kemba Walker could also be involved. This is a good trade for both sides, but is Al Jefferson enough for Rondo to re-sign with Charlotte? I don't think so.

Like Charlotte, there is a slim chance that Rondo would want to commit long term to the Toronto Raptors. However, he and Demar Derozan would make an entertaining back court. The Raptors would trade an up-and-coming player in Terrence Ross, the expiring contract of John Salmons, pick no. 20 and a 2015 first-round pick. Boston would be getting a young, somewhat proven player and more draft picks.

This trade scenario is a bit complex, but Rondo would love the opportunity to play with Josh Smith. It would have to be a three-way trade involving the New York Knicks. Detroit would get Rajon Rondo and J.R. Smith, New York receives Brandon Jennings, while Boston acquires Greg Monroe in a sign-and-trade, Jonas Jerebko and Imam Shumpert. It's a bit "out there," but it works for all team. Perhaps Rondo and Smith can join forces elsewhere?

The Sacramento Kings are looking to acquire Josh Smith, which will further convince Rondo to re-sign with them if the Celtics choose to trade him there. Sacramento would essentially send Ben McLemore, the rights to Isaiah Thomas, Carl Landry and the No. 8 pick to the Celtics for Rajon Rondo. This is by far the best offer for the Celtics.

2. Los Angeles Lakers

It would be extremely interesting if Danny Ainge traded his best player to the Celtics' biggest rival. The Los Angeles Lakers would send pick No. 7, Steve Nash's expiring contract, and a future first-round pick for Rondo. Pairing Rondo with Kobe Bryant would open the door for another marquee free agent to join forces in LA.

If the Houston Rockets fail to sign either Carmelo Anthony or LeBron James, they should pursue Rajon Rondo. They would surrender either Omer Asik, Jeremy Lin or both, Chandler Parsons and possibly a first-round pick for Rondo and Brandon Bass. This trade gives Houston a legit Big Three comprised of Dwight Harden, James Harden and Rondo.
