Dallas Mavericks Rumors: Alleged Trade for Tyson Chandler, Raymond Felton a Good One
With the 2014 NBA free agency period right around the corner, the Dallas Mavericks are already ensuring they won’t have revert to “plan H” like they did last offseason when they missed out on all their major targets. Granted, Monta Ellis was a nice consolation, but the Mavs are reportedly trying to bring back Tyson Chandler via trade and he’s not the only upgrade they’re pursuing.
Knicks-Mavs “close” on Tyson Chandler/Raymond Felton to Dallas for Calderon/Dalembert, sources say. Wayne Ellington possibly involved too.

In his only season with Dallas, Chandler helped the Mavericks to their first and only NBA championship as the defensive anchor in the paint for an offensively-driven team. Since his departure via free agency the following year, Mavs fans have longed for a dominant post presence to get their squad back into title contention.
This rumored trade between the Mavs and New York Knicks is one that would undoubtedly increase Dallas’ odds of getting back to the Finals in 2014-15, especially considering it would be getting a solid point guard in Raymond Felton to pair with Ellis in the backcourt.
Dallas would give up Jose Calderon and Samuel Dalembert in exchange for Chandler and Felton, so basically the teams would swap point guards and centers. The Mavs would reportedly also send Shane Larkin and Wayne Ellington to New York.
This trade being executed would prove once again Mark Cuban and company are trying to win now while Dirk Nowitzki is still an effective scorer. Giving up Larkin and Ellington could cost the Mavs their future, but that’s not the concern right now in Dallas, nor should it be. Chandler and Nowitzki won a title together already and they can do it again, especially with a dynamic third star in Ellis to shoulder some of the load.
Of course, this is all still a week before free agency begins. It’s a known fact the Mavs will be big spenders this summer and with a ton of big-name players on the market, their new rumored Big Three of Nowitzki, Ellis and Chandler could easily turn into a Big Four if they were to land another underrated star like Lance Stephenson, Chandler Parsons or Pau Gasol.
With Chandler and Felton’s contracts, along with Nowitzki’s new team-friendly deal that is yet to be signed, Dallas will still have a truckload of cap space to use in free agency and after only landing Ellis last offseason, you can bet Cuban and company won’t “settle” again this year. Mavs fans shouldn’t expect someone like Carmelo Anthony or LeBron James in blue next season, but Felton, Ellis, Nowitzki, Gasol and Chandler would be a championship-caliber starting unit.
Once this trade is official, expect more big moves by the Mavs before the start of the 2014-15 NBA season.
