Up until about a week ago, it was looking very likely that the Cleveland Cavaliers would select Joel Embiid. Now, it is extremely unclear how far Embiid will slide in tonight’s draft. The Philadelphia 76ers were arguably the team affected most by his foot injury and will most likely be in a situation with him on the board with the third overall pick. While drafting Embiid could change the franchise, here are 5 reasons why it is a risk.

5. Need for a Wing Scorer

The 76ers have lacked a dynamic scorer since the departure of Allen Iverson, and with the wing position being such an important spot in the NBA, Embiid clearly does not fit that mold.

4. Need for a Closer

This is similar to the previous reason yet much different. Teams usually do not go to their big man at the end of game when they need a crucial basket. The 76ers are in desperate need to find a scorer they can rely on in the closing minutes.

3. Lack of Experience

He has drawn many comparisons thus far, some as good as being compared to Hakeem Olajuwon, and some as bad as Greg Oden. The sky may be the limit, but Embiid started playing basketball at the age of 16 and there is no guarantee he will develop into anything special.

2. Nerlens Noel

While Embiid may not play the same position as him, having another 7-foot player could stunt the growth of Noel. With teams increasingly using a “stretch-4” at the power forward position, having Embiid and Noel would not allow the 76ers to do so.

This is the most obvious reason on this list. The fact that he missed the 2014 NCAA Tournament with a back injury was alarming. Now with the stress fracture in his foot, it is hard not label Embiid as injury-prone before his NBA career gets underway.
