2014 NBA Draft: Aaron Gordon Will Give Orlando Magic Athleticism And Defense

By Kareem Gantt

When the first three picks of the 2014 NBA Draft all fell into place, I was certain that the Orlando Magic would go for a point guard, and the best one on the table was Dante Exum.

But the Magic decided to make the first shock pick of the draft by going with Aaron Gordon, an athletic freak who has an incredible touch around the rim and can defend any position on the floor. The Magic needed another big man who can add a level of toughness to the frontcourt, and Gordon can certainly provide those needs.

One of the knocks on Gordon is his lack of an outside game. But during his workout with the Magic, he shot the ball really well, and proved the doubters wrong by showcasing a strong outside game. Remember, these were the same NBA pundits that dismissed Victor Oladipo in last year’s draft because of his perceived lack of an outside game. But he shocked everybody by shooting a decent percentage from the floor, and now with Aaron Afflalo gone, could assume the role as the offensive leader of the Magic.

Gordon could very well have the same effect, but the Magic needs his toughness and defense, two areas he really excels in. I see Gordon being a 15-10 kind of player, and Magic fans all over Central Florida will be ecstatic once they see Gordon live and in person.

Yes, I was shocked the Magic did not get Exum. But Gordon is a great pick who should do wonders in Orlando.
