The New York Knicks could be losing their best player. To no one’s surprise, that player is Carmelo Anthony. Although losing Anthony would be a huge hit to the team, picking up Pau Gasol would provide much-needed championship experience.
Gasol is not the hottest name on the free agent market, but he is still a great player who could start for a number of different teams. This past season, Gasol managed to put up 17.4 points per game and 9.7 rebounds per game.
The Los Angeles Lakers just had a season that they would like to forget in a hurry, but that is a different story for a different day.
Although I am sure Anthony would like to play alongside a player like Derrick Rose, who knows if the Chicago Bulls will land him.
Bringing in Gasol may not be the best answer to keeping Anthony in a Knicks uniform, but it definitely wouldn’t hurt the cause. Plus, New York cannot afford to miss out on at least one big name player in this year’s free agency.
Gasol is not the youngest player in the NBA — about to turn 34 — but he is still a solid player, he would bring championship experience to the team and Phil Jackson is now with the organization. As I am sure many people know, Jackson coached Gasol in L.A.
Who knows where Gasol will end up, but bringing in the 7-footer would be a huge plus for the team. If New York has any chance at keeping Melo, it has to bring in some big names. It is as simple as that.
