Despite his track record, Pau Gasol is one of the most underrated players in the NBA. His level of talent is off the charts, and he is a proven champion. He is a free agent, and there will be many suitors wanting his services. With Gasol’s championship pedigree and skillset, he would be a perfect fit with the Miami Heat.
Gasol was misused during his last two seasons as a member of the Los Angeles Lakers. He is best at playing with his back to the bucket, but was relegated to a pick-and-roll brand of basketball which often used him in the high post to help utilize his unique skillset. Although Gasol is multi-talented, he was never comfortable in this system.
Gasol has made over $130 million in his NBA career, and money isn’t a prime factor at this stage in his career. It is unknown what type of salaries Dwyane Wade, Chris Bosh and LeBron James will want, but all will have to take a pay cut for Gasol to join the Heat.
Many feel that Gasol is at the tail end of his career, but he is definitely worth the risk. Last season, he averaged 17.4 PPG to go along with 9.7 RPG. Looking at Gasol’s numbers, they don’t scream that he is on a decline, and his numbers also state that he is still one of the better “bigs” in the NBA. It will be easier said than done bringing Gasol to south beach, but Pat Riley has worked his magic before when the odds were stacked against him.
