At the moment, the San Antonio Spurs aren’t in need of much help in any specific area. With Patty Mills expected to have surgery, his absence will have to be filled, but it seems the Spurs have turned their attention in another direction. Rumbles have come out that the Spurs are seeking Pau Gasol and his low-post presence.
The addition of Gasol would make the Spurs the obvious favorite to return to the NBA Finals next year, solely based on his talent. Despite the Los Angeles Lakers having one of their worst seasons in recent history, Gasol was no slouch last year. His 17.4 points and 9.4 rebounds could definitely be used in Alamo City, but his ability to pass would be the most intriguing piece to Gregg Popovich. Gasol and Tim Duncan paired in the post would create some mismatches and open up so much on the offensive end. In order for that to happen, the Spurs would have to give some valuable pieces in return.
If the Spurs don’t re-sign their big time free agents in Mills, Matt Bonner, Boris Diaw, and Aaron Baynes, then they would have the room to offer Gasol’s ideal contract in the park of $10 million annually. The Spurs would have to work some financial magic to pull in the big man along with all their free agents.
This is far from any deals as the Lakers do everything in their power to keep the pillar of their low post office at home. With Kobe Bryant coming back, drafting Julius Randle, and efforts to pull in another big-name superstar by Lakers’ Jeanie Buss, Gasol could have a hard time looking anywhere else.
The Spurs don’t have fancy tactics and grand gestures to employ in the recruiting process – you might even say they don’t really recruit. The Spurs’ dynasty speaks for itself, and rightfully so. The ball is in Gasol’s court.
