Although there are some teams in the NBA that are far from contending and could use some serious help this offseason, let’s take a look at five contending teams that have to cash in during NBA free agency. Well, that is if they want to seriously challenge for a title in 2014-15.

The Houston Rockets already have players like James Harden and Dwight Howard. Not a bad core. However, there is a chance that they land Carmelo Anthony. If that does happen, Houston will probably enter next season as the favorite to win the title. If it doesn’t, well, the Rockets will still be a good team, but may not have enough to win it all.

4. Chicago Bulls

If Derrick Rose comes back and is the same player he used to be, the Chicago Bulls probably won’t need too much help this offseason. However, we will not know that until the season actually starts. Until then, the Bulls desperately need some help on the offensive side of the ball. Like Houston, landing Carmelo Anthony is a possibility, and would make the Bulls a top team in the NBA.

3. Indiana Pacers

The Indiana Pacers did not look very good against the Miami Heat in this year’s playoffs. May I remind you that Miami lost in five games to San Antonio in the Finals. Landing a player like Goran Dragic would go a very long way. Whether the case, Indiana could use a new piece on its team, possibly a piece removed.

2. Oklahoma City Thunder

The Oklahoma City Thunder already have one of the very best players in the league in Kevin Durant. They also have Russell Westbrook. However, the team is simply not as good as the San Antonio Spurs — really no team is. Adding a player like Pau Gasol would be huge. Gasol is not in his prime anymore, but he can still ball.

If the Miami Heat plan on keeping LeBron James for more than one year, adding a star player, a role player or really anything is a must. James may sign with Miami no matter what, but his deal could possibly only last for 1-2 years. If that is the case, Miami needs to show James that it is going to be competitive for years to come by building around him. If not, then the best player in the world could walk in a year or two (still could walk).
