In another summer, or another situation, Chris Bosh would be one of the front-line free agents available in the NBA. Instead, since he, LeBron James and Dwyane Wade all opted out of their Miami contracts together, Bosh again feels like the third wheel as he has for much of his Heat career. He doesn't have to stay, though it's likely he does. Here are five potential landing spots in free agency for Bosh.
The Knicks would probably have to jump through quite a few hoops to make it happen, but signing Bosh would be a nice rebound (and would help their rebounding) in the wake of potentially losing Carmelo Anthony, which appears more and more likely by the day. Bosh could once again be "The Guy" if he goes to New York, and that's something that may be on his mind after these last few years in Miami.
With Kobe Bryant's injury and other roster failings, by the end of last season the cast of characters wearing Lakers uniforms every night looked nothing like the real Los Angeles Lakers. With Bryant due to return but post Pau Gasol probably departing (perhaps to Oklahoma City), Bosh could go to L.A., be a star and help the Lakers get back in the right direction. He could also help mentor top draft pick Julius Randle.
While the Knicks were mentioned earlier, the more likely NYC team to go after Bosh's services would be the Nets, especially if they lose Paul Pierce as is rumored. The Nets have shown they don't care at all about the NBA luxury tax and will pay whatever they want for whoever they want. The question is, would Bosh want to go to the team the Heat bounced from the playoffs last season?
If Bosh is going to go anywhere, it's fair to assume that Toronto might be the place, where he originally played before moving on to Miami to be part of the Heat's run to four straight NBA Finals. Whether the Raptors can afford to bring Bosh back is another story, since they just spent nearly $ 50 million (wisely) to keep Kyle Lowry. But pairing him up with Bosh could further reinvigorate a Toronto team that made strides last season.
The most likely landing spot for Chris Bosh, however, would make for a soft landing, since he wouldn't be going anywhere. While the news of Bosh, James and Wade all opting out of their contracts has turned every NBA fan into a fantasy general manager for their team, the likelihood is all three players get restructured deals to stay in Miami with assurances that the rest of the roster will be more competitive than in past years.
