New York Knicks Rumors: Pau Gasol, Carmelo Anthony Would Make Team Instant Contenders

New York Knicks Rumors

The New York Knicks clearly want their superstar back. After all, Carmelo Anthony is one of the best scorers in the NBA. However, they may get their superstar back and Pau Gasol, which would make them instant contenders.

Gasol may not be the very best player in the NBA, but he is still a very valuable piece to have. This past season, Gasol averaged 17.4 points per game and 9.7 rebounds per game. Teaming that up with Melo’s 27.4 points per game and 8.1 rebounds per game would give the Knicks a great duo.

The Knicks went from a 54-28 team to a 37-45 team in one season. However, things are looking very bright for New York.

The team recently brought on Phil Jackson and Derek Fisher. Jackson has had a massive amount of success as a head coach in the NBA and Fisher has seen a great amount of success as a player. They both should thrive in their new roles.

It will be interesting to see if the Knicks are actually able to land Gasol and Anthony, but the addition of Gasol would certainly be a huge blessing. At this point, you would think Anthony would want to come back to the team. The front office has been making a bunch of noise as a recent and they are trying to bring on great players to build around Anthony.

There are plenty of other teams interested in Anthony, but landing Gasol would more than likely be enough to bring back New York’s best player. That is just speculation, though.

This is legitimately moronic. In what universe are Melo and an aging Pau better than Lebron and Bosh? With Derrick Rose returning, the Bulls (a team that finished 4th in the East) would also be significantly better than the Knicks with Melo and Pau. Derek Fisher may have been a good player but he has obviously done nothing to prove he can succeed as a coach. Title contenders? Give me a break. Not only would signing Carmelo and Pau NOT make the Knicks instant title contenders, but it would reduce their chances for long-term success because they wouldn’t have enough financial flexibility to sign other free agents next summer and beyond.

Actually, the only way the Knicks could sign Pau Gasol would be if he agreed to take the Knicks’ cap-strapped $4 million per year. There is no guarantee that he would decide to take that, but if he did, the Knicks would definitely be contender. “Rose returning” was the biggest argument for the Bulls winning a championship last season and look where he finished. As for signing Pau “reducing their chances for long term success,” a $4 million per year and another $20 million coming off the books next season would still allow the Knicks to make a splash in 2015. With Melo, Pau and a functioning point guard (Calderon) working in the triangle would most certainly enable them to remain competitive in the Eastern Conference that proved to be much weaker than the West.

Melo could be offering to share some of his potential max deal pay day to Gasol, even a few million might be enough to sweeten the pot. And Melo would still be making more than if he went to LA…

Gasol’s chemistry with Calderon could be really great too, esp within the triangle. And, Id take Gasol over Bosh…Gasol’s stock has gone down because he’s been on sub par teams the last few years but through all that he’s stayed healthy and effective….he would be a welcome addition to the Knicks and would also draw other talent as well including possibly teaming up with his brother next year
