The Los Angeles Lakers seemed to be somewhat of a dark horse to sign Carmelo Anthony once the big-name free agent started making visits to potential suitors, but things have changed. On Saturday, the Lakers suddenly emerged as one of the more likely landing spots for Melo.
Lakers have moved into serious contention on Carmelo Anthony, multiple sources tell Yahoo. “In the game now,” one source close to Melo says.

If you were looking for the first dramatic twist in NBA free agency, apparently here it is. Of course, it seemed like just yesterday Anthony, after meeting with New York Knicks president Phil Jackson, was on board with Jackson’s plan and leaning toward returning to the Big Apple next season.
But now here come the Lakers, with all their Hollywood glamor, entering the Anthony sweepstakes at the last second. It would totally add insult to injury for Jackson, too, if Anthony were to choose to sign with Los Angeles instead of New York. It was only a couple of seasons ago the Lakers chose to hire Mike D’Antoni instead of Jackson, which, at the time, Jackson considered to be the ultimate slap in the face.
But now if the Lakers were to steal away Jackson’s only truly valuable asset? Keep in mind, Jackson is also currently engaged to Lakers part-owner and president Jeanie Buss. If those Thanksgiving and Christmas dinners weren’t awkward already, just imagine how they’re going to be if the Lakers now one-up Jackson.
Apparently Anthony wants to play with Pau Gasol, who can more easily re-sign with the Lakers instead of some contender with minimal cap space. In the end, Anthony will be leaving money behind if he signs with the Lakers, but Los Angeles is a very, very pretty place to live, especially for NBA free agents.
