With their dreams of obtaining Carmelo Anthony slipping away, the Dallas Mavericks should turn their attention to another small forward who is more within their price range.
Luol Deng is one of the better small forwards out there on the free-agent market, and he would be a terrific fit in Big D. Small forward was a weak spot in the Mavericks’ starting lineup last season, and the Mavericks knew that heading into the offseason, landing a productive starting small forward was at the top of Mark Cuban‘s wish list.
The Mavericks’ first target was Anthony, since he can bring a wealth of scoring options to the Mavericks’ starting unit, and take the scoring load off of Dirk Nowitzki and Monta Ellis. But it seems like Anthony has a taste for a bigger market, and that scratched Dallas off of the list of would-be suitors.
But with Deng, the Mavericks can upgrade the small forward spot without breaking the bank. Deng has a bag full of offensive moves all on his own, and add an extra bonus, Deng can provide tough defense at the position, and we all know that the Mavericks desperately needs a defensive ace in the starting lineup.
So, for basically half of the cost of Anthony, the Mavericks could end up with a forward who can give them 17-to-20 points a game and provide solid defense at the same time. Dallas should get over their loss of Carmelo and pursue Deng instead. He would be a much better fit.
