Carmelo Anthony has reportedly narrowed down his potential destinations to just the Chicago Bulls, Los Angeles Lakers and New York Knicks, with the incumbent Knicks being the favorite. While New York can offer Anthony the most money, it may not be the best choice for him. Here are 5 reasons why Carmelo should not re-sign with the Knicks.

All indications are that Anthony would be given the maximum contract allowed under the NBA's CBA if he was to return to New York. All of the very same pressure that he has had to deal with for the past few seasons would be back, except now even stronger. The Knicks' roster is ugly, and probably will remain that way for a while. Lofty expectations and low-quality basketball aren't a very nice mix for a star player.

In the immediate future, Anthony would be saddled on the court with under-performing veterans like Andrea Bargnani and Amar'e Stoudemire and outright cancers like J.R. Smith. The Knicks have perhaps the most dysfunctional group of players in the league; why sign there if you can choose not to?

Derek Fisher is a complete unknown as a coach, and this has to be an area of concern for a player who is considering inking a contract that would commit him to the team for half a decade.

Carmelo is 30 years old and likely has just three or four seasons of superstar-level play left in him. Even if Phil Jackson can defy the odds and put out the dumpster fire that is the present Knicks team, Anthony will probably be past or at the tail end of his prime.

New York is a mess at the moment. Other suitors for Carmelo give him a better chance to win immediately. The Chicago Bulls with Derrick Rose and Houston Rockets with James Harden and Dwight Howard each become major championship contenders if they add Anthony. The Knicks, meanwhile, are a fringe playoff team in the pathetic Eastern Conference even if they bring him back.
