Based off what we have seen in the Orlando Magic‘s summer league games, they may have found their new starting point guard in Elfrid Payton.
Now, the attention in Orlando turns to finding a capable, veteran backup to the rookie guard. One player who will fit that bill is D.J. Augustin, a talented playmaker who is currently without a team to call home.
After a rough start to his career, he finally found his groove last season with the Chicago Bulls. On a team that was desperate for any kind of offensive production, Augustin was given the green light to shoot at will. He averaged 13.1 points and 4.4 assists per game last season, proving that he can be a capable and reliable scorer in the NBA.
The Magic are currently stockpiling their bench with veterans Orlando’s young guns can lean upon for guidance. Augustin can provide the same type of veteran pedigree, but he can also provide steady scoring off the bench and hit big shots at key moments in the game.
Orlando would be a perfect fit for Augustin as well, as he would without a doubt be the sixth man off the bench and be the offensive leader for the second unit. Augustin would not be commanding a high price tag, so it would be a win-win for both the Magic and Augustin.
The Magic need more shooting off the bench, and Augustin needs a new home. It’s time for the Magic to put a deal together and bring Augustin into the fold.
